Request for help:  We have had a request for help from an MCA member, Sophy Tayler, who is involved with PACT (Priority Action for Camberwell Transport).  You may know from your own experience, or your family’s experience, how travel to and from hospital adds to the stress of being unwell. Our local NHS Trusts are engaged with TfL in lobbying for better transport links to Camberwell, but need good quality evidence to support their case. A patient and staff survey is running online, but we want to reach as wide a range of people as possible. Sophy is coordinating volunteers to help gather views from patients and visitors at onsite at Kings College Hospital and the Maudsley, Thursday 25th Feb, and Thursday March 3rd.  If you are able to help by sparing an hour or two to get people complete the survey, please contact Sophy:  email sophytayler@hotmail.com  or phone:  07584 390712.

Lambeth Council is currently consulting residents on a Conservation Area Statement for the Minet Conservation Area.  The statement provides information on what makes the conservation area special, offers guidance for people wishing to make changes to their property and contains proposals for the future management of the area.

Deadline for responses to the consultation is March 14.  More details and copy of the Conservation Area Statement can be found here.

As has so often been the case, many MCA members helped with the refreshments at Archives Day again this year: making a variety of cakes, sandwiches and delicious soup; helping prepare and serve them and making sure visitors and locals were well looked after.  The Archives team is always very grateful for our support which is amply shown by this note we've received from Fiona Price.

    Thank you all.

    Open Day

Just a note to say thank you to you and your team for providing the splendid refreshments again at this year’s Open Day.

We think our numbers were down this year on last but nevertheless it was an enjoyable day for all involved.  I do hope you didn’t “feel the pinch” too much in the refreshment area.

The soup was delicious as ever and the cake was very good too.

Please pass on our thanks to all concerned

There was a strong turnout at the meeting in Longfield Hall last Wednesday, when the proposed plans for Loughborough Junction were discussed.  Chaired by Vassall Councillor Jackie Dyer, residents had a chance to raise any questions and concerns they have about the scheme which includes a proposal to close Calais Street.

The CPZ campaign website has new posts about more traffic issues that may affect the MCA area:

    • an application from Morrisons to open a retail unit on Patmos Road and a request to extend delivery times from 6am to 11pm, and newspaper deliveries between 4am and 6am
    • the discussions and petition to stop the closure of Vauxhall bus station

The deadline for comments on the Morrisons planning application is 23 September.  This link will take you to the planning application from which you can register and comment too.

As many of you will know, the MCA lobbied Lambeth Council on the issue of parking around Myatt's Fields Park in 2009 and while we successful in getting them to conduct a formal consultation, the result was very disappointing.  Since then, we have seen the steady increase in parking and traffic congestion in the MCA area.  There were many of us in the MCA who predicted that this would happen, not least because of the redevelopment of the Myatt’s Fields North estate and the decision to increase the use of Camberwell bus station as a pivotal hub for many bus routes.  In addition, because we were, and remain, an island of unrestricted parking with controlled parking zones all around us, it was inevitable that we would see dramatically increased congestion in the streets around the park.

Now, the residents of Calais Street have reopened discussions with Lambeth Council and have set up a petition to request that the option of a CPZ here be reviewed once more.  You can sign the petition here.  We would encourage all residents, and MCA members, to sign it.

For the latest information, please see the campaign website.

The MCA is looking for people who would like to get involved in the committee. There are two posts free:
    - Treasurer
    - Planning

These are volunteer posts. Commitment is to a one-hour meeting once per month (usually second Tuesday at 7.30pm), plus some work in between (a minor amount of book-keeping for the Treasurer and scanning online planning applications, consulting with members and commenting on applications if appropriate for the Planning role)

If interested, let us know by email on conservation@minet.org.uk

Are you a member of the library?
Have you ever visited the archives?

If the answer to either of these questions is 'no' then pop into your local library on Knatchbull Road and become a member or visit the archives team and see just how much they can share with you about the history of our area.

With cuts on the horizon, the library may come under threat, but the more people using it the more likely it is to have a successful future.

More than books, come along for music, films, internet and a space to relax and think.

Many of you will remember our friend Mel Browne, Chair of the Minet Conservation Association for over 20 years and a founder member of the Myatt's Fields Park Project Group.  Mel ran the annual Fair in the park for many years and, as Chair of the MCA, helped to save Longfield Hall from being closed down, and sewed the seeds for many local projects, such as the park project, the Save the Minet Library Campaign, the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, and many others.

Mel Browne retirement presentation - March 2004

Sadly, Mel died in mid March.  Mel's daughters Nick and Tammy have asked that friends and neighbours join with them to remember Mel's life with a celebratory picnic in the park at 1pm on Sunday 23rd May.  We have already planted an oak tree (photographed below) on the bandstand side of the picnic area and hope to be able to dedicate a bench in her name near the tree.

Please do join us on 23rd May.  Bring a picnic and a blanket.
